Breakdown.

Its still not finished - I'm going to change the walls and change the floor (obviously)... once this is done.... as well as bits that aren't in shot are all textured I'll be SMILING :D.

I've been thinking about the folders today as well briefly. I cannot decide which I should have as my MAIN folder.

Artist?
I did some concepts yes - but they weren't especially STRONG....
I wrote the script out a few times (with Sam) and altered a number of things so thats cool....
Had little involvement with the storyboard but I did a few animatics.
Little involvement in model sheets.
Colour Boards - Sam did.
Filmic Language Sam and I discuss different shots everyday - if not on the blog on the phone.
Modelling I did a whole room!! so thats a big plus I suppose.
Texturing again the whole room.

Technical?
Lighting - Lit the whole room and may have to help Sam out at a later date with the lighting of the other rooms so may be a strong area here.
Rigging - had a brief go at painting weights - but not a strong area to focus on.
Dynamics - None as of yet however may be animating with nCloth - undecided yet.
Particles - have done a few tests - but this was in After Effects so far.
Compositing - I'm definitely going to be doing this to sort out timing of shots etc and how long a pause after shots after characters have left scenes etc.
Sound - I've overseen all the sound so far however not created any of them yet - even though I've had a wee crack I didn't tell anyone about.
UV mapping - I unwrapped all the UVs into either Shells or one solid mesh from the hitmans apartment.

Animator??
I apparently can animate reasonably well ... news to me. So far I've never really done my animation due to the fear and lack of time. Now I've actually spent a little bit of time with it and learnt so much in the last 3 years I think I'm ready to give it a shot.
Character animation - seems to make sense to me however I have nothing to prove it with yet.
Prop Animation - I have already been doing throughout the project but theres not a great deal of it - Stu's already done the driven keys on the guns and the case.
2D EFX Animation - I will have to tackle in the up and coming weeks as we have bullets flying through the air and things breaking etc.

I may well be going ahead with animation ... but I shall have to wait and see.

This was it

MESSY DESKTOP

This is my desktop... I just made a lovely image behind it from the desk in the film WHACK'D.... but you can't tell - time to sort some of this out. Too many projects and too many bits and bobs have led me THAT monstrosity... I know it'll get bad again however I'll have to clean it up a little bit now considering I'm actually running out of desktop space... Hopefully it'll look better in an hour or so of housekeeping :)

Objective Met

I managed to get all the bookshelf textured to a state I am quite happy with....I'm going to have a break now... and then crack back on with the textures after an hour or so.

:)

Today

I want to get done all the books and the shelf area - as well as make a start on the desk... and check lighting alongside it. I fixed the lighting yesterday but I want to see if it works for the majority of the shots. It now has some BEAUTIFUL shadows... also shadows on wireframe - would it be noticed and would it be worth it?

Just been Skyping Max (Web Designer)

He confirmed the website dates for me - as long with Caroles E-mails I got through today which ...weren't exactly helpful. Graphics and Moving Image were all wrong... ANIMATION WERE RIGHT!!! VICTORY FOR THE GREASY HUNCHBACK NERDS! anyway.... ahem....
When speaking to Max I was negotiating a few extra pages for the website. This meant that we can have a page per team project to really sell the idea and leave people interested in the film. Rather than each person attempting to sell their work through their own ONE pages they can do it collectively. Something I thought up and I hope Dan Dalli and everyone in animation will help me out filling these pages.

I don't check my e-mails on googlemail too often...

Maybe I should... I got an e-mail invitation to submit our project to the http://www.linoleumfestival.ru/ festival!!! Sounds pretty cool. I'm glad we have outside interest on our film and people are beginning to sit up and notice we have something special here. Just really need to get cracking and get it done now!
The e-mail is more or less all on the team Blog so you'll have to read it on there. Was a good read though and I think I will seriously consider it.

Goals and a Chat with Dan Dalli

Need to write about it... mentioned blogs and folders... also mentioned weekly deadlines again.
Got work now though.
After work I have written this -
Dan decided we should allocate more work appropriately and give ourselves realistic deadlines to work to. It is this reason I have the schedule at the bottom of the page. SO i can look at it at a daily basis and it never run off :p. I add to it quite often even though the deadlines are not always met. Its useful to understand the timeframe in which I'm working in.
I find working to deadlines which are a week away are too far away as I very little time I find myself constantly busy with work etc. This means I find myself constantly wanting to do my work and getting everything done asap. My personal deadline will be for Wednesday (1day away - was 2 though when I set it) and at some point on Wednesday I will hopefully finish all texturing of the room (if Max and the Rave Live guys lay off me a bit and I can find the time to get some texturing done :) )

More Texturing... Again...

Top image is the final one with the brown coffee stains inside :)
Old texture... above.

Yeah I was like... what would it looks like with a guy standing there - so I stuck in 'Mr Coffee stain man' lol Only took a couple of mins - the reason for doing this is due to sheer amount of work I have to do - and to make sure I don't go insane.

From the outside looking in.

More Texturing and a lil bit of weighting

So for the last couple of days I've been texturing - need to do a lot more tomorrow though. Hopefully finish most of it tomorrow. Its getting there now... just need to re-do the walls a little better and I appear to be getting a lot quicker at it now as well.

I had a go at re-weighting Ferhans rig. It didn't end up too pretty. I went back and had another look at the rig and weighting he had done and I ended up thinking it wasn't that bad... there were a couple of alterations however I think we could still use this rig - even if it is for the opening shots... I think its possible to do a walk cycle holding a briefcase either way. We shall see on Monday when Stu has a crack at it.

Monday - I have already attempted to get out of the prior engagement at work - I booked it in before I realised we were in every Monday as there were no timetables for us available on Moodle. I have managed to get out of half the thing I was going to which only lead me to being about 30mins to an hour later than most people arrive (10am) anyway. So thats not too bad.

Friday 26 March 2010

Sam... The idea

As its a run down apartment... I went for a different kind of front door... like an old wooden one... this is a first attempt took about 10 mins... so not too bad... I would probably make it more cracked with a couple more holes.... this way you could see the silhouette of the guy behind before he even opens the door... meaning you get that initial anticipation... one of the 12 principles don't you know... then again.... it could just look like a shack ... eg... out on a beach in Hawaii somewhere... let me know what you think... and if I should stop this idea NOW... or continue? up to you man.

Text.....ure

This is what I've been up to so far today guys... had to alter a few things in the scene as well... am getting there though... slowly. hopefully be able to meet that deadline for Monday!!!!

Short Film - Alarm Clock

Saw this ...figured it was pretty good and could be used as reference in our filmage.

Ok guys

Sorry I havn't been doing much on this blog today... I've been attempting to sort out EVERYTHING lol... anyway - heres some pretty pictures of what I've been doing... Render Render Render Render Renderrrrrrrlicious!

Added Spec... Above

Added Diffuse
Added Bumb to the colour....
Trial ones... weren't too hot lol.

Too busy

I wish people couldn't get hold me of me sometimes - I've just been asked - for my swim teaching job to work every Friday running up to my degree show.... I obviously had to decline as I'm already trying to get out of the job I HAVE prior to the degree show. Not quit but some time off at least to sort everything out.
I'm currently texturing the interior of the apartment. And its taking a while to get it the way I want it to look :(

CAN I FINALLY GET SOME WORK DOWN NOW PLEASE!?

I'm thinking these look ok...Sam's guna say they have too much bump guaranteed... I might disagree with him though... click on it and see it close up... I think it looks PUKKA lol

Top one is more recent...

After spending the ENTIRE morning attempting to figure out what date our degree show is - graphics and moving image seem to be convinced it is the 9th and 10th I have an e-mail from Carole Mallett informing me that it is the 10th and 11th. Makes a big difference to us as we have ONE day where our concept work will be shown and the other will be JUST the film on display. I hope to hear back from Carole even though she is out of the office until the start of April. I don't know who is wrong however I really want to rectify the problem before inside out goes live online! Max was saying it could be later today which is worrying as the date is not even official and everyone is thinking different days?!!?

hehe

A guy can dream :p

Face Rigs Trauma

Today consisted a meeting with Clym from the 2nd year - he really seems to know his stuff so thats all good. Also with a recommendation from Dalli we are happy for him to help with us on our project. Ferhan and I had a number of issues with the Hitman in that the teeth just won't sticking with the jaw as he was blend shaping it. This lead me to have 5minutes to brainstorm... problem solving is a strong point of mine. Eventually I came up with a number of solutions - 1 rig the face so we have a jaw bone - this would mean we have to re-do all the painting weights again and new bones and the blend shapes would 'BRACK' up big time (mess up). With this idea thrown away as Ferhan dismissed it led me to re-think another strategy. I had come up with a couple of others but Ferhan seemed to have done most of them.
Finally - we got it to work with - Combining the Two Jaws together (upper and lower) making them one Mesh. This ONE MESH was NOT combined to the body mesh (face). From this we moved the Verts separately - like in a blend shape....wait... NOT LIKE....EXACTLY THE SAME AS... this therefore allowed a seperate blend shape - as if the face and the hitman was not even present.... this should allow us to move one blend shape of the Jaw - animate along side it the teeth and hey presto - we have a lower jaw swinging down. I then considered that we can now apply the Set Driven Keys approach to this meaning that the Blend shape... will work as ONE - I know we've done it the wrong way however this was a stumper for Ferhan ... and Lewis as well I believe so I'm glad I managed to help out both teams.

2nd Years

Today Sam, Stu and I pitched to the second years. It went ok and we seemed to get a fair bit of interest from the guys. Sam and I had a look at the blogs of all the 2nd years that were on our list. We've got a number of good ones but then again just because they wrote their names down it doesn't mean that they will be willing to work for Whack'd tomorrow. We also managed to catch a glimpse of our degree show website today in the making. Looks quite nice and easy to navigate and easy to understand. Theres a place for our showreels as well as teaser work coming up! quite excited about that actually :)
Back to the second years. I think we might be using some for texturing due to the sheer amount we have to do. Sam and I have discussed it already but not with the entire group. Spence - I'm not sure if he knows however Sam has more contact with him than I do - one of the benefits of two directors. Tomorrow I'm going to bring in my PS3 and test the 'Games Night' Fundraiser we have planned. Hopefully it will work but I MUST REMEMBER THAT!!! ARgh lol
So Team Whack'd now has a group e-mail to send promo work to clients later on in the term as well as teasers. e-mail us at
teamwhackd@hotmail.com and one of us will get back to you. :) I'm starting to look forward to the degree show now - and I still can't wait to animate with our very own characters :D rockwell is annoying and old now considering he isn't ours. Having something that you are part of as a large group is great saying - we all made that. To be honest I feel that I've had the least to do with the characters even though I keep saying change this and change I havn't felt in the loop too much when it came down to the modelling. The blend shapes Ferhan sent to me a few times and I gave him some pointers which was good. Ah...render is done.
Am currently doing texture tests 01 - 03. they aren't going great however these are the presets that Maya give you.... these are not what I planned but I just thought I'd have a go .... and no. Right....*cracks knuckles* LETS GET GOING!

Its 10 past 10

I've been up since about 7 this morning working on importing files and doing a bit of PPD here and there. I managed to set up the A Drive that Dan Dalli mentioned last night for quicker and easier file transfers - once finished with a piece of work we can all access it which I think is a REALLY good idea. I'm not entirely sure if I want the 2nd Years to have access just yet considering they would be able to access the models and all the scenes etc - not sure how I feel about that at the moment.
This morning I have managed to - make cardboard boxes and alter the first one so they all are different, I have positioned these into the scene accordingly. I have also modelled a clock this morning - didn't take very long at all but its another area of back ground animation thats easier enough to do for one of the guys that doesn't want to animate (it was going to go in there anyway but I had never got round to it.

Progress Review

So it was the first day of Dan Dalli's Reign over the 3rd years and it went very well. Mike was very useful to have around for the pre-production phase however we lacked the lessons we needed so badly due to snow, train cancellations and the busy lifestyle that comes with the job of 'Head of Animation'. Having Dan Dalli there on a Monday to talk to about our animations has put a number of peoples minds at ease, including my own.
All in all I'm not too worried about the team as we stand currently. I know we have a pressing deadline approaching but I still think that it is perfectly manageable with the team working as they currently are. I understand that it looks as if we still have a lot to do however I'm not so sure we do. We need to pick up the pace with the texturing currently but I think that Sam and Josh are very good 2D artists and I think they could use these skills and apply them to the 3D models very effectively. Stu is raring to animate and I'm starting to catch that infectious feeling too. Originally I thought I would be more of a 'technical folder' (the 3rd year main folder I would be filling) but now I'm thinking I may well be edging towards animation. The group don't necessarily know this just yet but I in my own head am not sure about it just yet. As I'm still quite an all rounder I don't like to classify myself into a niche of a folder but I'm starting to consider my options considering the job opportunities lying ahead.

Dan Dalli managed to convince us that we may as well get a few second years involved considering some of them may be better than us (he didn't say this but he may have been thinking it :p) There might be an amazing texture artist in there which would share the load that Spencer has got at the moment.
Dan made us list all of our problems we had currently in our films - Sarah wrote one big name on her sheet haha! Sam and I in our film didn't have too much to write. Our main concerns were only texturing and lighting (although I'm happy to light... just as I have been picking bits up from various places throughout the years). He also asked us to list any team members that are not pulling their weight. Sam and I agreed that there was no one currently pulling their weight. I hate to say it but Stewart was quite slow to start off with however he definitely picked up the pace and we are totally back on track now. Over the past week I believe the communication across the blog is occurring a lot better now which is a bonus - I understand why we keep these things now - not only for marking purposes clearly.

In other news Jared is yet to reply about the STL files which we have created but apparently it might be a while before we hear back about them at all. The STL files are referring to getting REAL models made up for prototypes testing out some machine I believe in the College somewhere (unsure). It would be really nice to get these done however I'm not entirely sure if it is going to be cheap.

I have set the team to animate a number of different tests prior to the production to make sure we get some good quality animation. So far, myself, Stu, Ferhan and Sam have had a crack at it. Some better than others however I'd like the other guys to have a go as well. Spencer I'm not entirely sure how good he is at animating at all and nor am I sure Josh. Josh appears to becoming increasingly pessimistic however he CAN do amazing things with pencils he is struggling applying his 2D world to a 3D set. He's already created some kick-ass characters which we had to tweak EVER SO SLIGHTLY but I think he needs to open up his world to the rest of the animation pipeline and get stuck in like I have had to do for UVing and texturing. Having NEVER laid out a UV properly (I have now with the chair) I understand what it is to venture into the new. It is daunting ... but at least he is trying... and I'm thankful for that.

All in all - the team is working pretty well... still.... just hope we can meet the deadline (next Monday) Sam and I have set ourselves. Initially it was my deadline as I am getting slightly concerned that we won't have time to animate (THIS SO DOESN'T CONTRADICT WHAT I SAID EARLIER). We'll get it finished. But to what standard. Time will only tell.

Friday 19 March 2010

More of it

I'm slowly getting there. Been on it for ages. Too long. I don't like it anymore. I am rushing the UV's that are not going to be seen - as you can see here - they don't match up but this won't be a problem as they will most likely be in the darkness of the room anyway. If they are in the light then I shall re-do but I'm pretty sure we are going to be JUST fine

Animation...Coming soon?

Where am I at I here you ask?
I've been UVing for part of the day and the hardest part of the room is nearly done :) YAY!
Means that by the end of next week (hopefully as the hitman will be nearly completed by then) I hope to have a lot of the textures applied as well :) This might take longer than I anticipate so hopefully I can get some help from someone else on the team too.
Once the room is complete with the hitman in it and everything scaled appropriately - Animation can begin!!!!

Thursday 18 March 2010

So much UVing

I'm actually beginning to understand this process now. I understand how it can take Josh and Spence so long to UV a character... I never thought it didn't but now I am beginning to get to grips with it too hopefully I can help them out and they can create some textures for the room in the process to get a kick ass opening sequence - be it dark.
I have now UV'ed the door area... except the handle and a couple of picture frames!

Am still contempplating removing the rug...as it looks..... Ahem....awful!

Rockwell and Stu's Rifle

STUS RIFLE

STUS RIFLE

STUS RIFLE!!!

As you can see from the images I've been posing for photos. Grabbed stu's motel and was attempting to figure out how large it would have to be for the characters etc. 0.005 is roughly the answer. I think its actually .0048 but it rounds it up :p Stu's been modelling big haha.
Anyway the gun itself is really well made and Stu did a really good job on it. Can't wait to get the hitman along side it and we'll be ROLLING!
I have however - when producing the occlusions - noted that the elbow should be higher rather than down behind the butt of the gun. My mistake obviously but I've learnt a lot :D

Lighting Test

This is really from Sam's images - He rendered an occlusion however I wanted to check that there was enough light on the table for the shot to work. Seems there is :)

Shot List

Today Sam and I started to consider all the different shots so we knew exactly what we were doing with our time and how to hand out different areas of the film. It also puts us into perspective into what we need to do. We have 9.2 weeks left now. Thats not a lot. We have to get cracking asap to get this film done!

Group progress

Our teams still getting on well. Got Spence on the case for Uving now for the Hitman as Splay and PO aren't currently using him. Lewis has come up with some great short bits of animation for the team as well as some AWESOME music so thanks for that Lewis!! Other than that Josh has altered the characters (as we might be having a close up on the hitmans foot) and he's now proceeded on to texturing some of the characters hes modelled! I'm really happy with his models he's made they fit really well with the style in which Sam initially set. Ferhan has been rigging, rigging and re-rigging again and again getting used to painting weights. Hes getting better and better all the time though so good job there - I'll have to remind him to do other bits and bobs if he keeps doing this though as we all have three folders to fill! He's just started to animate so hopefully he can crack on with some quality tests early on. Stewart is finishing his rifles and motel hopefully by the end of this week ready for texturing by Spence, himself or anyone really. Sam and I had a crack at the animatic over the weekend however I don't think he finished his so we are waiting until Wednesday now (tomorrow) to talk about them both. Two different versions with two different ideas. May be good but then again it may be bad. I already know there are a number of shots I would happily use from his in my version - I just hope he found some pieces in my (almost a minute longer) version useful. As for myself - I am laying out UVs currently. I'm not a 2D artist unfortunately but I'll give it a crack. I really need a texture artist to give me a hand but as I said - I'll never give up :p for longer than a day or so. I just keep coming back for more even if Maya does beat me down over and over again. I've got to grips with the laying out of the Uv's pretty quickly luckily. I'm also spending an hour a day animating ready for those final rigs to be completed.
One thing I've always stuck to at work and ALWAYS as a team player - only ask others to do something you wouldn't mind doing yourself - if you don't want to do it coz it's a sucky job chances are they don't either. I don't mind getting my hands dirty in any process of this animation and I think most the team would stand right beside me too - whether it animation, lighting or texturing.
To sum it all up - our teams moving along - some slower than others but we're getting there.

Please drop a Chair ON ME!

This.....WAS A NIGHTMARE - the UVS where EVERYWHERE ... but I'm finally getting somewhere now!

Texturing progress

Wasn't... supposed to render this.. but it happened anyway. lol
Thinking I'll UV the most important stuff thats in shot first up... then do the bg objects when running out of time :p

Texturing is getting it ON

That is the same image... as you can see I've taught myself how to lay out the UVs... havnt sewn them together or anything though but texturing that flat book should be MUCH easier now :D lol

Walk Cycle

Took about 2-3 hours but by the end of it I was getting quicker and quicker
Another animation test. Now... back to textures I suppose or laying out some UVs - Brrap!

Comments are welcome as always!

My Animation Test _01

Man flicking dirt and then checking his hand out... i recognise there are faults in this piece of animation. The leg is too floaty and needs to be worked on - and the hand turn is poor as well. But not bad for a couple of hours - will help me be better as I have learnt from these mistakes.

Monday 15 March 2010

My Animatic - LONG VERSION possibly lol

Animatic - needs some explaining though.
- THe intro i whipped up together... but I want it to be really dark and dusty with just enough light to see the character... and the guy actually turns the key but he wasn't RIGGED.
- the sniper rifle shot - fitting the scope needs to be slightly longer and the look out the window needs to be a little shorter. (pre titles)
- the black just after the opening titles - is the hitman moving his eye into the scope of the gun.
- At 1 min u see a news report - hear it anyway and see pictures of our character and josh's text (previous post)
- at 1.24 - shot is a close up of the hitman moving his finger slowly to the trigger as he takes aim.
- at 1.38 - this shot is so long as he has to climb OVER the seat and then hide for a bit...before popping his head back up...and getting shot at again.
-at 2.02 - the same shot is used again however it would a few gun shots til they stop and then you hear footsteps outside.
When the hitman enters the motel - I would actually want the target to fall down when he throws the knife (error on my part) and the positioning of the target is off.
- the close up of the pistol is the 'click' as the hitman has no ammo.
- the close up of the hitman would be an :o supprised look and then the target is kind of still panicing. Hitman grabs a knife (from down his sock currently lol) and the target (prefarebly falls down)
Hitman reloads - target goes :O and looks away as the hitman approaches him... and then shuts his eyes.
Lightswitch on (but this would be done better than this shot - you'd see the gun being pointed then a quick swoop to the light switch with the gun
Target checks his body and then notices pile o' bodies (preferably right next to him!)

The rest you know.

Exporting from Premiere

I don't know why - probably for 'ease' but its just confused me a hell of a lot. I can't seem to export properly with a compression that I want at the quality I want. I wanted a SUPER quick export of an h.264 but instead got a 20min export for h.264.... bah! I knew I should have put it all into after effects - I know what I'm doing there and feel at home. Oh well. Whats done is done now. I know Sam knows how to export - I shall keep trying until I get it.

Forgot to post this badboy last week... Schedule UPDATE!! Woop!

Schedule
